Terry Shaivo's parents have no faith in God

Okay, my opinion on both the Florida and US Congress' involvement in this sordid affair have been adequately expressed by numerous people. The upshot is that Congress has no business getting into the personal lives of people unless the state has a *compelling interest*. Terry Shiavo's situation ain't legally compelling. What this is is invasive. 'Nuff said.

What I do want to say is that I have come to a conclusion that her parents, the Schindlers, have lost faith in their god. After all, if you think about it, whatever happens to Terry is, by definition of their religion, God's will. If they remove the feeding tube, regardless of whether Terry lives or dies, it will be by God's will alone. If Terry's soul is there, and God means it to stay put, we will know, because Terry will not die (and we'll all call it a miracle). If Terry's soul is there and God means it to leave, she'll die, and we'll all cry. If Terry's soul isn't there, then she's already gone, really, and what the Schindler's are doing is AGAINST GOD'S WILL AT THIS VERY MOMENT.

But see, they don't want to know this. They don't want to be confronted with God's will because they have no faith in Him. They are afraid of His decisions. Keeping Terry's tube in is the best trick they know how to get around this.

Because they can't accept God's will.

More to the point, they fear death. They're not SURE of what lies beyond. Or who. They think this jealous so-and-so they've built up in their heads is going to consign their poor daughter to some firey pit just because she didn't complete some act of abject submission before she dies... hmph.

Any religion that has as its central figure a right royal bastard like that, I want no part of.

Through all this, the part that bothers me most is they cry of the sanctity of life. If Terri is intended to live, and you trust G-d's will, then she will leave. If you keep her alive when she would have naturally died, you are defying G-d's will.

Sometimes G-d wants you to take a deep breath, accept that you don't know the reasons for everything, and trust that it will be ok.

I pray her parents will find some peace when this is over, and that her husband won't be subjected to this any longer. What a terrible sin it has been, to keep everyone trapped in this drama long after Terri, their daughter and wife, was gone.

fundamentalists and faith

(Hi! I'm a friend of shastaw's.)
Keep in mind that while fundamentalist Christians believe that God's will must be done, they also believe that the Devil is afoot in the world, actively trying to thwart God's will. So I sort of agree with the argument that the parents have to accept that whatever happens is God's will, because God always wins, right? However, I don't agree that their fighting to keep Terry "alive" is by definition going against God's will because they obviously honestly believe that they are doing the right thing, i.e. doing what God wants.

What really bothers me about this case is the venom on both sides from the outside public. Where is the compassion? This is an incredibly horrible situation for both the husband and the parents (and Terry, of course) to be in, no matter who you think is right or wrong. While I think that Terry should be allowed to die with dignity, as a parent, I can sympathize with why the parents are fighting to keep her alive. Maybe it's because of some religious beliefs they have, but it's also because she's their daughter.

I echo shastaw's comments above with the hope that this will be over soon and everyone can find peace.
