Kouryou-chan has been with the Colleen Bell talent agency now for over a year. In all that time, she has not received a single job, and very few auditions for one...then again, there haven't been that many out there. The agency warned in the beginning that this wouldn't be a "several auditions a week" sort of thing.

I had originally gotten her involved in this because I thought she would do well with modeling...I'm not talking runway stuff. Just calendars, catalogs, maybe some television commercials. That kind of thing.

But now she has an opportunity for a big break...maybe. Last Thursday afternoon I got several emails from the agency about a movie audition that she was asked for (along with about fifteen other little girls her age). No doubt the agency is one among many that have been included in this call, so there will be a ton of little girls trying out for the part.

The part is actually for the lead female role in a major motion picture. Produced by Dark Castle Entertainment (Joel Silver's production house) in conjunction with Warner Brothers, this seems to be a horror film. I've got a small portion of the script (Kouryou-chan was expected to memorize, or at least mostly memorize, three scenes to audition with), along with an attached email from the casting company (which may or may not have been intentional) which shows that they haven't even settled on who the director is (they give two names...I'm pretty sure which one is going to get it, though).

However, what I've already read of the script shows that the writer should be shot. Not only is it obvious, predictable, and flat, but the main female character (a little 8 year old girl) talks like an adult through a little girl's mouth.

Now, I'll reserve judgement until I've seen the entire script...who knows, maybe the kid is possessed by a demon or something. But if it's just what the script that I've already seen shows, the writer has never been around a kid in his life (yeah, I'm betting the writer is a guy).

Some of the themes that Kouryou-chan is expected to explore in this film through the dialogue are particularly unsettling, and I'll be honest and say I'm not exactly sure I feel comfortable with her saying it. Worse, the scene with the most uncomfortable dialogue is her favorite! Course, she is also looking at this as fantasy, and not reality, and I've already talked with her about the main character's skewed view of life and why it differs from ours, so maybe that is why it helps.

Tomorrow will be the audition. In a way, I'm almost hoping she doesn't get it. Filming will begin in December in Toronto for 3 - 4 months...eek, how would I deal with education for her? A private tutor. Yuck.

Maybe you could transfer her to WAVA if she gets the part? She could do that online from anywhere, and it counts just like brick-and-mortar public school.

Have you had a chance to see a possible contract? Maybe you could get a clause entered that would allow you to pull her from the movie if it gets to be too much for her psychologically? I know Hollywood has been working on doing better for child actors, but I'm not sure how that would translate if filming isn't in the US... An idea though.

BTW - there's also home-schooling. I can probably get info from my housemate regarding that if you're interested.

Worrisome themes aside, it sounds like an exciting opportunity.

Wishing you all the best in regards to this.
